Testimonials

Here's what a few of our explorers of the Soul Manifestation Process are saying:

"Loved it. Absolutely loved it"

When I met Debra Sophia I felt, this person has the capacity to hold me. When I heard about the Soul Manifestation Process I wanted to do it because I was intrigued, and I trusted her. I appreciate how Debra held the rhythm during the process. At each step something would come up for me. For one thing, it showed me where I needed courage. I loved it, absolutely loved it. And to think I can take this with me for as long as the intention feels right. I definitely am an advocate.

"An inner-focused way to see what you are meant to do"

I was stuck, not knowing what else I could do to promote my book. When Debra presented her Soul process to our study group, I could see this has value. I trusted her. Going through the process together got me out of the mud. I could see new avenues to pursue. I became more clear about my goal, to widely share the message of my book - that we achieve personal growth in the service of others. Yes, I would recommend her process. It's an inner-focused way to see what you want to do, what you are meant to do. It's not your typical approach to coaching.

"Bringing resolution to open wounds"

Before doing the Soul Manifestation process, connecting with my inner spirit seemed hard to do.  With the sound practices Debra taught me, I am able to activate a link between my conscious and subconscious mind. Now I am making decisions I feel more at peace with while bringing resolution to open wounds and questions. This changes everything.

"Feeling good about the changes"

Change is really hard - it’s an on-going process. I want to do it right, to have good things come out of the changes I’m making in my life. This soul practice helped me to focus on things that are already churning in me. To reformulate and refocus my perspective and know hope is there along with love, compassion, and kindness. By giving up what happens to God or the Goddess, I have moved toward being more present and aware of the changes I want in my life. I feel good in doing this process with Debra.

12 Names That Plant the Seeds of Eternal Life

12 Names That Plant the Seeds of Eternal Life

Seeds That Bear The Fruit of Being

To briefly recap this week’s parsha Vayechi – “And he lived”

As the end of Yaakov’s days were drawing near, he asks Yosef to swear to him that he will bring his bones out of Egypt and bury him with his fathers in the Cave of Makhpela – a name that means “to multiply”. Then he blesses Yosef’s two sons Menashe and Efrayim as if they were his own:

Yisrael said to Yosef:

I never thought to see your face again,

and here, G’d has let me see your seed as well!

– Gen 48:11

Yaakov crosses his outstretched arms and blesses the younger as the older. Yosef tries to correct his father who refuses and says:

I know, my son, I know –

he too will be a people, he too will be great,

yet his younger brother will be greater than he, and his seed will become a full-measure of nations!

– Gen 48:19

Then in turn, Yaakov blesses each of his sons as the 12 Tribes of Israel. Later, the Book of Genesis ends with the death of Yosef at age 110 in the land of Egypt:

I am dying,

but G’d will take account, yes, account of you,

he will bring you up from this land

to the land about which he swore

to Avraham, to Yitzhak, and to Yaakov.

– Gen 50:24

Like his father before him, Yosef to asks his sons to swear they will bring his bones out of Egypt when G-d’s covenant is fulfilled.

Encoded in the Names

Remember back when Adam named all things? Well, as Kabbalah teaches, the name articulates the essence. In the Book of Genesis, each of the 12 parashot are given a name that identifies the central theme and importance of the narrative. Reading these 12 names in succession reveals a code describing the human story:

  • The purpose for the human being’s existence
  • The human soul’s transformation from a spiritual into a physical being
  • How we develop ourselves and our surroundings
  • Fulfillment of our mission in this lifetime

According to the Chasidic masters, the human story encoded in the names of the 12 parashot of Genesis reads like this:

Bereshit – Purpose
Noah – Tranquility
Lekh Lekha – Journey
Vayera – Vision
Chayei Sarah – Invigorate
Toldot – Produce
Vayeitzei – Extend
Vayishlakh – Delegate
Vayeishev – Integrate
Mikeitz – End
Vayigash – Union
Vayechi – Life

These progressive themes seed the ground of our lives today. To recap how far we’ve come, and where we are headed, let’s review each parsha.

Bereshit – Purposeful Creation

Does the world exist simply because it does, arising from the laws of physics and random mutation over time? Or is there a greater purpose, pattern and plan for existence?

The first word in Torah is Bereshit. Literally meaning “at the beginning,” it indicates that G’d created the world to serve a purpose. The Torah is the guidebook that outlines how this purpose is to be fulfilled, with the people of Israel playing a principal role in its realization.

Noah – Tranquility

In the story of Noah we discover this purpose: to transform a chaotic existence into a harmonious world. The name Noah means rest, comfort and tranquility. Sheltering in the ark achieves this purpose on a micro scale with macro consequences.

If the world didn’t exist, there would be no need to find peace. Another meaning for the name Noah is satisfaction. It’s not enough to be peaceful. As human beings we need to feel a sense of purpose to keep from boredom and nihilism.

Why does the world exist? According to Midrash, from Tanya, ch. 36:

G’d desired a dwelling in the lowly realms.

That the material world becomes a place receptive and at home to Presence. And for Tikkun Olam: that this broken, strife-filled world be transformed into a tranquil place at peace with itself and all existence.

Sufi teachings echo this perception. From Hazrat Inayat Khan:

The purpose of life, in short, is that the only Being makes His oneness intelligible to Himself. … Since God is one, He always realizes His oneness through all things; through man He realizes His oneness in its fullness.

– Vol. 1, The Purpose of Life, 13. Being Truth

Thus we see existence is purposeful: the satisfaction of the divine desire for peaceful indwelling on earth. As above, so below. To fulfill this purpose, the human soul awakens in the physical world. And then what?

Lekh Lekha – Journey

This parsha calls each of us to ask ourself, “What is my purpose, and how can I move toward fulfillment in this moment?” Lekh Lekha literally means to go to yourself – to your essence. To journey from a multiplicity of outer forms to an awakened inner experience. G’d is calling us to abandon our ordinary way of thinking and to ascend to a higher spiritual plane.

We depart from rest and comfort to journey into an unknown, alien place. For this is “the land that I will show you” – the arena in which your mission in life will be fulfilled.

Vayera – Vision

The soul does not go alone. It is fortified with eyes and ears able to sense Divine Presence. Vayera begins with the verse:

And He revealed Himself to Avraham.

This vision will be Avraham’s guiding light in his efforts to make this world a dwelling place for G’d.

And today, in our lives, what is being asked of us? Then as now, to hear and see signs of G-d’s grace. In life’s puzzling ways, we are not alone. We have inner light to help us navigate. Just as when we walk the path of a labyrinth, we are invited to tune our eyes, ears and heart to receive inner guidance.

Chayei Sara – Invigorate

With this vision as our foundation, we bring soul qualities into life. Like Sara, by invigorating ourselves with qualities of love, compassion, patience and joy, we are able to reshape our day-to-day experience. In this way, serving as Tzadik or in Teshuva can be the focus of our life, the object of our will, and the yearning of our heart.

We know why we’re here, and that we have been supplied with the vision and spiritual resources to carry it out. Now it is time to do our work.

Toldot – Produce

The word toldot means progeny and products. Throughout the parsha Toldot, we witness two levels of reality: human and divine. We are confronted with the play between fate and free will, destiny and choice — the same paradox each of us faces in our own lives.

We can follow divine guidance and fulfill our purpose as did Yaakov, the father of the 12 Tribes of Israel. Or we can reject our mission and lose our birthright, as did Esav. The choice is ours. Our mitzvot are the bricks from which the earthly dwelling for G’d is built, the acts which transform the physical into the spiritual.

Vayetzei – Extend

The first word of this parsha and its name, Vayetzei, means “And he left.” Once we are established in our mitzvot, we must step outside of our comfort zone and extend ourselves beyond our closest kin and immediate environment. It was by tolling for Lavan that Yaakov attained the peak of his personal growth, and then extended beyond himself to found the nation of Israel.

Vayishlakh – Delegate

And what do we do when we have extended ourselves to our fullest capacity, and yet, the irreconcilables remain? This parsha tells of Yaakov sending scouts to Esav. The matter is finally resolved when Yaakov wrestles in the night with Esav’s soul and prevails.

When we arrive at such an impasse, we can evolve even further by teaching and influencing others, who will in turn impact people and places that we ourselves could never reach.

Vayeshev – Integrate

In order to fulfill one’s mission in life, after producing, extending and delegating, the next step is to integrate these gains into the fabric of reality. Depending on our nature, we can uplift the world as the Tzadik, or mend its fabric in Teshuva.

Miketz – End

Once we have integrated our contributions into the threads of reality, we have reached the fulfillment of our mission. The divine has an dwelling place in our lives; we have contributed to the harmony and wellness of the world.

This completion has three stages: as Genesis continues, deeper dimensions of divine harmony unfold. The first stage is one of receptivity and understanding – establishing the vessel for G’d. This is exemplified when Josef interprets the Pharaoh’s dream and is placed in command. The dream has not yet been fully enacted.

Vayigash – Union

Now the two brothers stand together: Yehuda-the-Repairer approaches Yosef-the-Tzadik. The two become one with the divine reality, uniting heaven and earth. A perfect expression of G‑d’s all-embracing truth.

Vayechi – Life

And now we arrive at this week’s parsha describing the deaths of Yaakov and then Yosef. Similar to Chayei Sara, the parsha’s name means “And he lived.” The Chasidic masters explain that Vayechi signals that Yaakov’s life is an expression of harmony with the divine that is immutable.

From Bereshit to Vayechi, the parsha names chronicle the most basic truths of our existence: that life is purposeful, its purpose being to satisfy the divine desire for a dwelling place on earth; that the soul descends to earth with a vision of G’d that invigorates its character. Productive acts of goodness sanctify our lives. We must extend ourselves outward and reconcile the irreconcilables, and by so doing transform reality. These efforts will bring about a world united with G’d, and that pure and eternal life is the ultimate expression of the divine in man.

Living Your Purpose

This week we will focus on practices designed to attune us to our purpose. What we can do right now to move toward fulfillment in life? We will seek to build our capacity to create harmony in daily life — to continue our awakening to the internal worlds, and ultimately, to bring together the outer and inner realms in the marriage of heaven and earth.

Through breath, light and sound we can be in tune with the Infinite and the rhythms of this life. This beautiful, chaotic, ever changing, all-pervading Life.

BREATH

This week we will build on our practice from last week, using breath to express your individual mission in life. Our channels are these 5 qualities of being: Awareness, Personality, Will, Connection, Purpose.

Awareness: Focus on the simplicity of your breath. Simple awareness and gratitude of being alive. Visualize standing tall, confident in your presence on this earth. Your feet are on the ground; your crown opens to the sky.

Earth Purification Breath: Breathe in and out through the nose, 5 times. Be aware of the solidness of your body, your bones, your hands on your lap, your feet on the ground. Your body connects Heaven and earth. The color is yellow.

Personality: Scan the factors that make you, you. Your personality, likes and dislikes, beliefs and values. Visualize holding a bowl in front of your heart, empty and ready to contain the two rivers of receiving and bestowing. This is the quality of water.

Water Purification Breath: Breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth, 5 times. Be aware of the liquidity of your body, your blood, the water in your tissues and organs. Feel water pouring over your body from head to toes, as if standing under a water fall or in the rain. Let the water dissolve any habits, traits and emotions that no longer serve you. Open to the flow of divine Love. The color is green.

Will: Pour energy into the aspect of you that decides and takes action. Visualize the bowl you are holding in front of your heart filling with light. Light fills the vessel. This is the quality of Fire.

Fire Purification Breath: Breathe in through the mouth, out through the nose, 5 times. Be aware of the heat of your body, your warmth, your digestion. Feel the sun on your skin (either imagined or in the moment). Feel the waves of energy from the pulsing of your heart. Feel your longing for union. Sip heat through the mouth, exhale light through the shoulder blades. Let fire burn away all form that casts shadows in the Light. The color is red.

Connection: Our most important connection, the foundation for our life, is Oneness. Can you allow Divine Grace to bless you? This is the quality of air – all pervading and essential to life.

Air Purification Breath: Breathe in and out through the mouth, 5 times. Be aware of the spaciousness of your body, your breath filling your lungs, the air circulating in your body. Exhale and scatter your molecules as far as you can imagine. Inhale and recollect yourself in a perfect refection. The color is blue.

Purpose: Breathing gently and rhythmically through the nose, rest in the refinement of your breath. Feel the beating of your heart, allowing it to be filled with unifying Love. What clarity of vision arises?

CONTEMPLATION

Following your breath, mentally recite these contemplations drawn from the words of this week’s parsha and from the Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan:

Yaakov remembers the G’d of his fathers when blessing Yosef’s two sons, saying:

The G’d

in whose presence my fathers walked,

Avraham and Yitzhak,

the G’d

who has tended me

ever since I was born, until this day –

the messenger

who has redeemed me from all-fortune,

may he bless the lads!

May my name continue to be called through them

and the name of my fathers, Avraham and Yitzhak!

May they team-like-fish to become many in the land!

– Gen 48:15-16

Contemplate this presence and promise. When are you most aware of being blessed in your life?

If we only understood that every moment in life, every day, every month, and every year, has its particular blessing; if we only knew life’s opportunity! But the greatest opportunity that one can realize in life is to accomplish that purpose for which man was sent on earth.

– The Alchemy of Happiness: Life, An Opportunity

Inhale: The fulfillment of G-d’s purpose
Exhale: (silence)

As you inhale, keeping eyes closed, turn your head upward. Gather light in through your 3rd Eye. As you exhale, turn your head downward, with the light of the 3rd Eye shining into your heart. What insights about your personal role in this cosmic purpose arise?

LIGHT

With eyes closed, breathe in and out gently through the nose. Balance your inhale with your exhale. Keep your body still. Breathe gently in and out through the nose. In this refined state, focus on the right side of your chest. Visualize white light filling the right side of your chest. Breathe in white light, exhale white light for 5 breaths.

Now focus on your physical heart. Visualize red light filling the left side of your chest. Breathe in red light, exhale red light for 5 breaths.

Now focus on the center of your chest. Visualize green light filling the center of your chest. Breathe in green light, exhale green light for 5 breaths.

When you are ready, open your eyes and breathe fully, deeply. What is your experience of this balancing practice?

 SOUND

Similar to mantra, to practice Wazifa is to repeat a Name (quality) of G’d. Layers of meaning of the Name, which is encoded in the sound vibration, will be revealed to you through repetition and focus.

This week’s Sufi practice with sound vibration will again balance and harmonize the vertical and horizontal directions.

The horizontal direction engages us in a polarity that lends us a sense beyond time. Ya Awwal (yaa OW-wal) can be translated “the first,” and ya Akhir (yaa AA-ḳḥir) can be rendered “the last.” This is a mystical paradox. If G’d is infinite, how could G’d be first or last? For an explanation, visit the parsha Vayeshev and scroll to the practice with SOUND.

In the vertical direction, we develop our capacity to touch the hidden and bring it into manifestation. Ya Batin (yaa BAA-ṭin) is the most hidden treasure, the secret of secrets. Ya Zahir (yaa ḌḤAA-hir) means completely present in space, fully materialized, fully visible.

Recite these Names of G’d on the inhale and exhale, turning your head from left to right, then up and down:

Inhale: Ya Awwal (left)

Exhale: Ya Akhir (right)

Inhale: Ya Batin (up)

Exhale: Ya Zahir (down)

Rhythmically inhale and exhale, softly repeating each Name out loud 33 times. Afterward, feel the unifying effects of the sound vibration on your being.

ZIKR

Meaning “remembrance”, Zikr is the repetition of a sacred phrase with the intention of returning to the essence of Unity. Continuing from last week, we will repeat the central Jewish prayer known as the Sh’ma.

In Hebrew:

שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָֽד

Shema Yisrael YHWH Eloheinu YHWH Echad

The Sh’ma can be translated as: “Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one”. LORD is the unpronounceable four letter word יְהוָה – YHWH, the Name of G’d that can’t be named. Instead, we’ll use the word “Adonai“, meaning Lord, or “HaShem“, meaning The Name.

When practicing Zikr, it’s best to use the original language in which the prayer was revealed. As you inhale and exhale, softly repeat out loud, 33 times. Afterward, feel the effects of the vibration on your being.

Inhale: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu
Exhale: Adonai Echad

Inhale: Shema Yisrael HaShem Eloheinu
Exhale: HaShem Echad

NATURE

With the shortest days of the year, be especially aware of the play of light and shadow in nature. Continuing the practice from last week, go outside and locate two trees with their backs to the sun. Standing between the two trees, step between the shadows of their trunks. Know that as you step forward, you are moving through a threshold. While standing in the light, ask yourself, how does the Divine Light work through you here-and-now?

Cosmic Ladder of Our Lives

In the Yosef Saga, famine follows plenty. Is this our reality today? For a growing number, daily life is slipping toward lack: a famine of food, housing and social connection. Many freedoms we took for granted are now blocked, or risky at best.

As we retreat from the outer world, is this your invitation to open more fully to the inner worlds?

From a young age, Yosef understood his cosmic role. In contrast, the 10 sons of Lea did not awaken until later in life. Their eventual maturation becomes clear in the enactment of Yosef’s test. Had their hearts matured? Had teshuva begun? Yes, with Yehuda leading the way.

And He Drew Near

To briefly recap this week’s parsha Vayigashand he drew near”:

The Yosef Saga culminates in the reunification of the brothers and the migration of Yaakov’s lineage to Egypt. Having “discovered” his goblet in Benjamin’s pack, Yosef decrees that “the man in whose hands the goblet was found shall become my servant.” He releases the others to go home in peace.

Yehuda steps forward into his cosmic role and asks to speak with the one who is “like Pharaoh”:

“Now Yehuda came closer to him and said:
Please my lord,
Pray let your servant speak a word in the ears of my lord, and do not let your anger flare up against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh!

– Gen 44:18

After recounting the heart-felt story of his father’s fears and loss, Yehuda offers himself to be held captive instead of Binyamin. Seeing Yehuda’s transformation, Josef reveals himself to his brothers, telling them: Do not be pained and upset…

For it was to save life that G’d sent me on before you.

– Gen 45:5

Because of the famine, they must bring the family to Egypt . This is how the fledgling band of Jews left Canaan for Egypt. And as we say, the rest is history!

Connecting Heaven and Earth

While many themes arise in this parsha – destiny and choice, correction and self-transcendence, Tzadik and Teshuva – the expressed purpose is to bring spirit into matter: to connect Heaven and earth. First, let’s see how this is expressed in the parsha, and then we’ll look at this connection in our lives.

We witness the connection of Heaven and earth in the way that Yosef rises to power. We see it again as Yehuda steps forward in his kingship. And when Yosef intuits the deeper meaning of his brothers’ behavior. We find relief in Yosef-the-Tzadik, who shines with his foresight to prepare for the years of famine, and in saving many lives, protecting the fledgling children of the covenant.

Significance of the Neck?

Most dramatically, we see this connection of Heaven and earth in the way Yosef and Binyamin embrace:

He flung himself upon his brother Binyamin’s neck and wept, and Binyamin wept upon his neck.

– Gen 45:14

The neck connects the head with the body, the brain with the heart. From the Sufi Master Hazrat Inayat Kahn,

The mind is the surface of the heart; the heart is the depths of the mind.

We live in a universe of Light and vessel, Creator and creature. Daily we negotiate the challenge of living a G’dly life in a material world. To remember our divine inheritance despite the necessities and attractions of the physical world.

Reflection: In what ways do you perceive the commingling of heaven and earth in you? What is your longing? In an immature state, we act and react in self-interest. We see ourselves as separate, autonomous beings rather than as connected cells in an organism with deep purpose, patterns and rhythms shaping the multitude of outer form. How have you matured over time?

Overriding Our First Impulse

Traditionally, the first born is the carrier of family responsibilities. In Torah, there are several stories where the first born cannot rise to the task and abdicates his role. Esav and Yaakov, Re’uven and Yehudah, and in the next parsha, Menashe and Efrayim.

Of what does this remind us? That our first impulse is not always our finest. When we see ourselves reacting out of fear, resentment, greed or similar self-protecting reaction, we can chose to step back and observe.

We can ask ourselves, “what is the most loving way to respond, the most inclusive way to react, the harmonious way of peace?” We need not be bound by our “first born” reaction. We can rise above and master ourselves in the moment.

Invitation to Listen In!

Who else is longing to smell the fragrance of the history that belongs to both Israelis and Palestinians?

Another set of brothers, Ishmael and Yitzhak, are perceived differently in Torah and in Koran. The question, “Who was the sacrifice?” could be a cause for religious divide among Jews and Muslim.

For a unifying perspective on the relationship between Ishmael and Yitzhak, listen to our podcast with the International Director of the Abrahamic Reunion, Sheikh Ghassan Manasra.

This conversation also explores the method for overcoming your “first born impulse” in favor of a more considered approach. Return to the present-day Holy Land and reconsider the relationship between Muslims and Jews, Arabs and Israelis –

Not only is peace possible, it is preferred.

Climbing Jacob’s Ladder

BREATH

This week we will refocus our practice from last week, using breath to unite Heaven and earth in your individuated self. Our channels are these 5 qualities of being: Awareness, Personality, Will, Connection, Purpose.

Awareness: Focus on the simplicity of your breath. Simple awareness and gratitude of being alive. Visualize standing tall, confident in your presence on this earth. Your feet are on the gound; your crown opens to the sky.

Visualize holding bowl in front of your heart, empty and ready to contain the two rivers of receiving and bestowing. This is the quality of water.

Water Purification Breath: Breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth, 5 times. Be aware of the liquidity of your body, your blood, the water in your tissues and organs. Purpose: Breathing gently and rhythmically through the nose, rest in the refinement of your breath. Feel the beating of your heart, allowing it to be filled with unifying Love.

CONTEMPLATION

Following your breath, mentally recite these contemplations drawn from the words of this week’s parsha and from the Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan:

Remembering to thank the One who provides:

Upon exiting Canaan, Yisrael travels with all that was his. When he reaches be’er Sheva, he makes an offering to the G’d of his father Yitzhak:

And G’d said to Yisrael in visions of the night,

he said:

Yaakov! Yaakov!

He said:

Hear I am.

Now he said:

I am El/G’d,

the G’d of your father.

Do not be afraid of going down to Egypt,

for a great nation will I make of you there.

I myself will go down with you to Egypt,

and I myself will bring you up, yes, up again.

– Gen 46:2-4

Contemplate this assurance of guidance and remembrance – the co-mingling of Heaven and earth. When are you most aware of the presence of Unity in your life?

Through matter the soul attains to its highest realization; therefore, the physical body is a necessity for the fulfillment of its purpose.

– Sayings, Gayan: Song, Chalas: An iluminated word

Inhale: This is not my heart
Exhale: This is the altar of G’d

As you inhale, keeping eyes closed, turn your head upward. Gather light in through your 3rd Eye. As you exhale, turn your head downward, with the light of the 3rd Eye shining into your heart.

This week’s Sufi practice with sound vibration will bring together the previous two weeks of Sound practice. We will join the vertical and horizontal directions.

The Longing to Smell the Fragrance that Belongs to Both Israelis and Palestinians

by Debra Sofia with Sheikh Ghassan Manasra

Activating Religion as a Force for Peace

Do YOU believe peace is possible among Muslims and Jews, Palestinians and Israelis? Meet Sheikh Ghassan Manasra, the International Director of the Abrahamic Reunion. An ordained Sheikh in the Qadiri Sufi Order, Ghassan has dedicated his life to building peace. He is the founder of Anwar-il-Salaam: The Lights of Peace Center in Nazareth, the Director of the Islamic Cultural Center in Nazareth, and a leader in the Abrahamic Reunion for more than 20 years.

Founded by Shahabuddin David and Anna Less, the Abrahamic Reunion is a team of religious and spiritual leaders – men, women, Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Druze – dedicated to uplifting human consciousness and building peace in the Holy Land by opening hearts to the love and wisdom of all spiritual traditions.

In this podcast, Sheikh Ghassan discusses his work with the Abrahamic Reunion. Greatly benefiting from his vision and guidance, this organization of peace-builders has expanded its influence among the many cultures and religions of the Holy Land and beyond. Providing outreach, awareness and education in the US, Canada and Europe, the essence of their work is in Israel and Palestine.

From the Tent of Abraham

Through the Abrahamic Reunion’s programs, Ghassan addresses the many misunderstandings between the Palestinians and Israelis. He creates opportunities to bring them together to know each other as neighbors who have come from the same tent of Abraham. Ghassan explores the longing on both sides to meet and smell the fragrance of the history which belongs to both Israelis and Palestinians.

A consummate story teller, Ghassan recollects the transformation of participants from distrust to mutual respect who can work side-by-side to build peace in their communities. He shares true stories of militant radicals on both sides who have had a change of heart and now work together to find peaceful solutions.

The Root is Politics, Not Religion

Seeing the problem as political, not religious, Ghassan helps people from many cultures to overcome tremendous obstacles by simply bringing them together in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Listen in to discover why he sees NOW is the time to succeed, to believe that we will be strong together.

The dismal daily news misses the fact that the Abrahamic Reunion has grown in influence over time, making an impact – a real peace between neighbors. These efforts serve to create a new future for our children of peace, not fear.

From Sheikh Ghassan:

The Abrahamic Reunion

We will refuse to agree on everything! We will say NO! But we will love one another. We believe in the human being as a human being, the person as a person. And we love all of the people all around us, including the secular. They are part of us, part of our souls, part of our spirits, part of our life… a great mirror to see ourselves within them.

What Is the Direction for Peace?

The direction for peace is very simple. And it’s very hard. It’s simple if you are honest with yourself. It is hard when something horrific happens not to react. It comes through culture, education and taking a breath. It comes from reaching out and connecting with each other.

Your Questions Answered

What does the Abrahamic Reunion need most now to continue its work?

  • Funding! Please help support our peace-building efforts in the Holy Land

How else can supporters of peace contribute?

“It’s very important not to leave us alone in the field and on the ground.”

What future programs are planned to raise understanding and awareness?

  • PEACE UNITY PRAYER
  • Zoom with us on December 31st, 11:00 am to Noon EST
  • We invite all of you to come to see us

Alchemy of Dreams: Opening the Door to Inner Wisdom

Alchemy of Dreams: Opening the Door to Inner Wisdom

Miketz – Genesis 41:1 – 44:17

The Alchemy of Dreams

We swim in the ocean of life. When the ocean is calm, we feel secure. We maintain an easy grip on a shared reality. And in times like these, when more people are dying every day in the USA than we lost in the Twin Towers terrorist attack, when the zipper to our underbelly is wide open, when the meaning of words cannot be relied upon…

It’s appropriate to ponder the role of dreams.

Brief recap of this week’s parsha Miketz“At the end”. The Yosef Saga reaches a crescendo when Yosef’s servant finds his silver goblet in Binyamin’s pack, which had been placed there on Yosef’s command. Events that follow culminate in the reunification of the brothers and the migration of Yaakov’s lineage to Egypt. If like me, you are among the 51% of the world’s population who traces its religious and cultural heritage to Avraham, this is our story.

And it all hinges on dreams. If Yosef hadn’t told his dreams to his brothers, he might not have been sold into slavery. We never would have been in the diaspora, never wandered in the dessert for 40 years, never been enslaved, never left Canaan for Egypt. Telling the dream provides the stimulus for enacting the dream.

Pharaoh said to Yosef:

I have drempt a dream and there is no interpretation for it!

But I have heard it said of you

that you but need to hear a dream in order to interpret it!

.

Yosef answered Pharaoh saying:

Not I!

G’d will answer what is for Pharaoh’s welfare.

– Gen 41:15 – 16

Yosef planted a seed by revealing the meaning of the chief cupbearer’s dream. When Pharaoh had a dream he couldn’t interpret, the cupbearer remembered Yosef. If you know the story, this led to the reconciliation between the sons of Lea and Rachel, at least for a few hundred years.

So what does all this mean in our daily lives?

Pondering the Dream State

Right now, as you read this, tell me. Are you awake? Or are you dreaming? Remarkably consistent are the similarities in mystical perception throughout the ages and across cultures. Twenty-three centuries ago, the Chinese philosopher Zhūangzi observed this:

Once upon a time, I, Chuang Chou, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, a veritable butterfly, enjoying itself to the full of its bent, and not knowing it was Chuang Chou. Suddenly I awoke, and came to myself, the veritable Chuang Chou. Now I do not know whether I dreamt I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man. Between me and the butterfly there must be a difference. This is an instance of transformation.

– Translated by James Legge

More Than Poeticism?

Our shared reality is what our senses tell us. You hear a sound. Is that a dog barking, or a fox? A backfire – or a gunshot? You see a snake… or is it a stick? Even at the sensory level, we are not in agreement. Often, we are beguiled.

Diving deeper into the ocean of awareness, we realize our sensory perceptions are tinged with imagination, bias, concept… as such, we enter the world of human experience. Consider for a moment how literally you regard the stories of Torah. Was there a Yosef who wore a coat of many colors? Did he become the second most powerful man in Egypt? Did G’d Almighty interpret dreams through him?

Or is this simply a myth?

Living in the Land of Mythal

Our belief systems color our perceptions. Our priorities define which details we notice. Past experiences limit or free us to shape our future. What feels urgent and vital in this very moment will most likely fade and be forgotten tomorrow.

You see, how real is perception is a very deep question. Right this minute as I type these words, am I dreaming or am I awake? Why does my keyboard feel solid when we know through science that matter is mostly space? If by shared reality we agree that I am awake, how awake to The Real am I?

Mysterious Transmutation

According to Miriam-Webster, alchemy describes an “inexplicable or mysterious transmuting”. Certainly, when we dream during sleep we are mysteriously transmuted into a more fluid state. And when we awaken, how clear is our grip on Reality? Clarity? Truth? Love?

From the mystical perspective – e.g. Kabbalah, Sufism, Taoism – we are dreaming of our separation. We are dreaming that we can avoid consequences. We are dreaming that the visible, measurable world sets the standard. We are dreaming that we understand the inner life of the person closest to us.

Reflection: What are your awake dreams? What might you be mis-perceiving?

A frog in the well cannot conceive of the ocean. Can you play in the Ocean of Life without your feet touching the bottom? Can you leave the safety of the shore? Not needing to understand is the alchemical doorway to the wisdom of the Heart.

Let understanding stop at what cannot be understood.

– Doris Lessing

The “Great Dream”

In the parsha Miketz, three times Yosef ‘s dream interpretations set him on a new trajectory: with his brothers, with the Pharaoh’s imprisoned cupbearer and baker, and finally, with Pharaoh himself. These patterns reveal great truths that repeat and repeat, one inside the other.

Reflection: What pattern of rise and fall, of pivot and renewal do you perceive in your life? These are no less important than the archetypal story. Nor are they a separate reality.

Again, from the Taoist master Zhūangzi:

Only on waking do we know it was a dream. Only after the great awakening will we realize that this is the great dream. And yet fools think they are awake, presuming to know that they are rulers or herdsmen. How dense! You and Confucius are both dreaming, and I who say you are a dream am also a dream. Such is my tale. It will probably be called preposterous, but after ten thousand generations there may be a great sage who will be able to explain it, a trivial interval equivalent to the passage from morning to night.

Opening the Door to Inner Wisdom

This week we will focus on practices designed to wake us up from this slumber we recognize as our shared reality. We will seek to build our capacity to create harmony in daily life — to continue our awakening to the internal worlds, and ultimately, to bring together the outer and inner realms, in the marriage of heaven and earth.

Through breath, light and sound we can be in tune with the Infinite and the rhythms of this life. This beautiful, chaotic, ever changing, all-pervading Life.

WEEKLY PRACTICES: The Door to Wisdom

With the Soul Manifestation Process, we awaken to the present in the fullness of our being. This crisp, embodied awareness becomes the portal to listen for divine guidance.  We step through this door via breath, light and sound.

Suggestion: Do one practice a day, or do all 6 consecutively. Remember… have your Journal nearby to jot down any insights that may arise.

Audio Recording – Coming Soon

BREATH

This week we will use breath to ground us in the body, focusing on 5 qualities of being: Awareness, Personality, Will, Connection, Purpose.

Awareness: Focus on the simplicity of your breath. Simple awareness and gratitude of being alive. Visualize standing tall, confident in your presence on this earth.  Feel the solidness of your body and the earth you stand on. Notice the pull of gravity keeping you rooted to the earth.

Earth Purification Breath: Breathe in and out through the nose, 5 times. Be aware of the solidness of your body, your bones, your hands on your lap, your feet on the ground. You are held securely here on earth. The color is yellow.

Personality: Scan the factors that make you, you. Your personality, likes and dislikes, beliefs and values. Visualize holding bowl in front of your heart, empty and ready to contain the flow of your wants and desires.

The color is green.

Will: Pour energy into the aspect of you that decides and takes action. Visualize the bowl you are holding in front of your heart filling with light.

Feel your longing. Sip heat through the mouth, exhale light through the shoulder blades. Let fire and light reveal to you your passion and desire. The color is red.

Connection: We co-create with others. Who are your most important connections in life? How does your environment support you? The complement to Will, Connection opens to Divine Grace, the Will of G’d. Retain the image of the bowl of light in front of your heart, and similarly imagine the light of your closest relationships. This is the quality of air – we all breath the same air, it circulates.

Feel the beating of your heart, allowing it to be filled with Love.

CONTEMPLATION

Following your breath, mentally recite these contemplations drawn from the words of this week’s parsha and from the Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan:

When the brothers were brought into Yosef’s house, they “confessed” having found all of their silver given in payment for grain to be in their packs. He told them he had received their payment. The G’d of Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov had given them a gift:

Your G’d, the G’d of your father, placed a treasure in your packs for you — your silver has come in to me.

– Gen 43:23

As you contemplate the Yosef Saga, consider the treasures you have been given through divine grace. What have you received in your lifetime that you did not work to earn?

Through matter the soul attains to its highest realization; therefore, the physical body is a necessity for the fulfillment of its purpose.

– Sayings, Gayan: Song, Chalas: An iluminated word

Inhale: This is not my heart
Exhale: This is the altar of G’d

As you inhale, keeping eyes closed, turn your head upward. Gather light in through your 3rd Eye. As you exhale, turn your head downward, with the light of the 3rd Eye shining into your heart.

This week’s Sufi practice with sound vibration will focus on developing our capacity to touch the hidden and bring it into manifestation. Ya Batin (yaa BAA-ṭin) is the most hidden treasure, the secret of secrets. Ya Zahir (yaa ḌḤAA-hir) means completely present in space, fully materialized, fully visible.

We recite these Names of G’d on the inhale and exhale:

Inhale: Ya Batin

Exhale: Ya Zahir

Following a vertical line of direction, turn your head upward as you say Ya Batin and turn your head downward as you say Ya Zahir. Rhythmically inhale and exhale, softly repeating each Name out loud 33 times. Afterward, feel the effects of the sound vibration on your being.

NATURE

This week, be aware of the play of light and shadow in nature. Next time you are outside among the trees, locate two trees with their backs to the sun. Standing between the two trees, step between the shadows of their trunks. Know that as you step forward, you are moving through a threshold. What insight, purpose or intent arises?
